Riki Butland is a globally respected Director of Photography known for his powerful visual storytelling and collaborative approach. An international DOP cinematographer, Italy based, Riki operates between Rome, London, and Dubai, holding Italian and UAE residency and a British passport. His work spans feature films, high-end television, and commercials, with a focus on cinematic innovation and emotional resonance. Riki’s most recent work as Director of Photography on Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning stands as a career-defining achievement. This epic feature blends folklore, action, and fantasy on a grand scale, and Riki’s cinematography plays a central role in shaping its visual identity. The film affirms his ability to lead large productions with artistic and technical excellence. His journey began in stills photography, mentored by his mother – a Life magazine photographer famous for capturing the iconic image of a Chinese baby with a tear. From the age of eight, Riki trained rigorously in darkroom techniques, learning the craft from the ground up. His passion for cinema led him to Samuelson’s in London, where he spent school holidays immersed in the tools and traditions of filmmaking. Riki’s cinematography credits include Selfie, a 30-episode Ramadan drama; Fast & Furious 7, where he shot high-octane car chases for the Abu Dhabi unit; and Star Trek Beyond, working as C-camera operator after being invited by legendary DOP Stephen F. Windon. These experiences underline his versatility and ability to thrive in high-pressure, globally coordinated productions. Although his commercial work as a director/dop has been prolific, Riki is most passionate about long-form storytelling. “Commercials make a good living,” he says, “but film is where the heart is. It’s a massive team effort, and every role matters.” Known for his humility, craft, and dedication to pushing creative boundaries, Riki Butland continues to define what it means to be a leading international DOP cinematographer, Italy based – combining traditional knowledge with modern storytelling to stunning effect.
