Dubai based Director, Producer, Scriptwriter John Anthony Flavin is an accomplished film director, scriptwriter, and TV producer known for his work on projects such as Boardwalk Empire, Divorce, Entourage, The Comeback, The Pacific, and his short films Jueves and Alien. Both films which he wrote, produced, and directed received critical acclaim at variousInternational film festivals worldwide.
Flavin’s journey in the entertainment industry began alongside some of the most prestigious names in film and TV. He started working alongside John Melfi and Michael Patrick King on Lisa Kudrow’s HBO show The Comeback. From there, he moved on to assist Steven Levinson and Denis Biggs on Entourage. This experience paved the way to a development executive for producer/director Alan Poul at Boku Films.
In a pivotal career move, HBO invited Flavin to Australia for a year to assist ten directors on the critically acclaimed series The Pacific. Here, he worked with esteemed directors such as Tim Van Patten, Carl Franklin, David Nutter, Graham Yost, Tony To, and Jeremy Podeswa, forming lifelong professional relationships. His exceptional work on this series led to a producer role on Martin Scorsese’s Boardwalk Empire, where he spent six years, working side by side with some of the industry’s best cast and crew in Hollywood.
Following the success of Boardwalk Empire, Flavin served as a producer on season 1 of Sarah Jessica Parker’s HBO series Divorce, created by the renowned Irish actor and writer Sharon Horgan. After the first season, Flavin moved to Europe to pursue a master’s degree in directing, leading to the creation of his first passion project, Jueves. This short film was accepted into 39 film festivals worldwide and won multiple awards for best short, best director and best lead actress.
Flavin holds both an American and EU passport and currently resides in the UAE. While freelancing he continues to hone his craft, having written three original pilot scripts—one of which was a finalist at the 2019 Oaxaca Film Festival, another at the Big Apple Film & Screenplay competition, and a short that won at three European screenwriting festivals.
In addition to his directing, producing and scriptwriting work, Flavin is a part-time producer for a boutique Spanish production company, providing top-tier production services for International projects looking to shoot on location in Spain.
